Baptism

Going public with your faith

Meaning

What Is Baptism?

Baptism is one of the most important acts of obedience a believer takes after placing faith in Jesus Christ. It is a public declaration — a visible, outward expression of an inward spiritual transformation. At Mt. Moriah, we baptize by full immersion, following the example of Jesus himself and the early church recorded throughout the New Testament.

Baptism does not save you. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8–9). But baptism is the first step of obedience after salvation — a joyful, public statement that says: "I belong to Jesus."

Who Should Be Baptized?

At Mt. Moriah, we baptize believers only — those who have personally trusted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This is often called "believer's baptism" and is a distinctive of Baptist churches.

We do not baptize infants, because baptism in the New Testament always follows a personal confession of faith. It is a response, not a prerequisite. If you were baptized as an infant but have since come to saving faith, we warmly encourage you to be baptized as an expression of that personal decision.

The pattern in Scripture is simple: hear the gospel → believe → be baptized (Acts 2:41, Acts 8:12, Acts 16:31–33).

It follows the example of Scripture.

When Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River, he "came up out of the water" (Matthew 3:16) — language that implies full immersion, not sprinkling.

It pictures the gospel

Going under the water symbolizes death to your old self — burial with Christ. Coming up out of the water symbolizes resurrection to new life (Romans 6:3–4). Immersion tells the whole gospel story in a single moment.

It follows the early church

The Greek word baptizo, used throughout the New Testament, literally means "to immerse" or "to plunge." The early church practiced full immersion, and we joyfully continue that tradition.

What Baptism Is NOT

We want to be clear about what baptism is not, because it matters deeply:

Baptism does not wash away sin

Baptism does not wash away sin

Only the blood of Jesus does that.

Only the blood of Jesus does that.

Baptism is not a requirement for salvation

A person who believes and is never baptized is still saved.

Baptism is not a sacrament that conveys grace

It is a symbol — a powerful, meaningful one — but a symbol nonetheless.

Baptism is not just a tradition

Baptism is not just a tradition

It is an act of obedience that Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:19) and that every believer is called to participate in.

What Happens the Day You're Baptized

Being baptized at Mt. Moriah is a celebration. Here's what to expect:

Before the service, you'll meet briefly with one of our pastors. You'll share your testimony — how you came to faith in Christ — and they'll explain the process. On the day of your baptism, you'll step into the baptismal waters in front of the congregation. Your pastor will ask you to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ, and then, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you'll be lowered into the water and raised back up — buried and raised with Christ.

It's one of the most joyful moments in the life of a believer. The church celebrates with you.
